A Part Taken for The Whole

synecdoche, new york

Anyone who has seen a movie written by Charlie Kaufman is either confused or a fan, or maybe both. He's the writer behind modern classics Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind; quirky, personal films that speak to the heart and don't neglect the mind. Well Charlie's gone and filmed his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York, about a theater director who builds a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener along with a large cast of notable actors. You can go to the official site for more details and a trailer.

In other good movie news, it's been reported that the rights to another Chuck Palahniuk book, Haunted, has been picked up. Haunted was a 2005 book of short stories linked together by the tale of a group of writers going on a retreat to stimulate creativity which turns out to be imprisonment, turning them on each other and themselves. I know I've talked to a few of you about this book and it's not known to be a favorite of Palahniuk's, though there were a few gems to be found. We'll see how long this one actually takes to go into production and what the result ends up being.

The Watchmen movie was just brought up again in the forums, right in time for a new trailer with longer footage. You can find the topic along with a link to the trailer here.

I'm still waiting for May '09 for the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, what movies are you guys looking forward to?
